💊 The Birth of Artificial Drugs (Emulating Mother Nature)
For millennia, humans relied on whole plants. The synthetic drug era began when scientists started isolating specific active ingredients from those plants to make them safer, stronger, and easier to manufacture.
1804 (Isolating Nature): German chemist Friedrich Sertürner isolates morphine from the opium poppy. This is the first time a pure active ingredient is taken from a plant.
1897 (The First Blockbuster Synthetic Drug): Felix Hoffmann, a chemist at Bayer, modifies a compound found in willow bark (salicylic acid) to create Aspirin. This marks the true beginning of the modern pharmaceutical industry.
1910 (The First Fully Artificial Drug): Paul Ehrlich creates Salvarsan, a synthetic chemical designed to kill syphilis bacteria. It is the first "magic bullet" drug created entirely in a lab, not copied from a plant.
🏭 Sickness Caused by the Industrial Revolution
The shift to synthetic drugs became urgent because the Industrial Revolution (roughly 1760 to 1840) created entirely new, devastating health crises. Populations crowded into filthy, unventilated cities, leading to specific types of sickness:
Infectious Diseases: Overcrowded, unsanitary tenements caused massive outbreaks of cholera, tuberculosis, typhus, and smallpox.
